City Councilwoman Laura Chick announced Thursday she has endorsed Corinne Sanchez in the race for the northeast San Fernando Valley’s 7th District seat on the Los Angeles City Council.

Chick cited Sanchez’s “experience and tenacity” in making life better in the Valley as head of the health service agency El Proyecto del Barrio.

“We need more good women on the City Council,” said Chick, who represents sections of the Valley.

“I think we bring a different and needed perspective to the council.”

Sanchez had previously won the endorsement of Councilman Mike Feuer and former 7th District Councilman Richard Alarcon, now a state senator.

Alex Padilla, another candidate in the race, has the support of Mayor Richard Riordan and the County Federation of Labor.

Meanwhile, 7th District candidate Tony Lopez said Thursday he has won the endorsement of Jaime Escalante, the former math teacher whose remarkable achievement with students at Roosevelt High School was portrayed in the film “Stand and Deliver.”

Escalante said that Lopez, a former district director for the Boy Scouts of America, has been an “advocate for youth programs.”
