For nearly 20 years, the Neighborhood Center has served the needs of the city’s disadvantaged. But now, the center on Santa Paula Avenue has a need of its own: a new building. City Council members decided this week to begin accepting proposals from architects and contractors to analyze the building and prepare blueprints.
“The site we’re currently in is falling apart,” said Geri Christian, tutorial program director. “For us to continue, we need to upgrade our facility.”
She said the building is termite-infested and has exposed electrical outlets, which violate code and pose a safety hazard.
City Development Services Director Mark Lloyd said council members may decide on a new building design in April.
