UC Irvine Gets Last-Second Victory

Megan Stafford’s free throw that completed a three-point play with .07 seconds left gave UC Irvine a 63-62 victory over Loyola Marymount in a nonconference women’s basketball game Saturday at the Bren Center.

Loyola Marymount’s Viola Gamez missed a free throw with nine seconds left in the game and UC Irvine got the rebound. After a timeout, Stafford took the inbound pass and drove to the basket, where she was fouled as her layup went in to tie it, 62-62.

UCI had trailed by seven at halftime but went on a 14-6 run to take a 38-37 lead with 13:28 remaining. Loyola battled back to pull ahead, 62-59, after Dana Hunter scored on a layup with 1:47 remaining.

Chelsea Mackey scored 19 points and Kirsten Cappel scored 13 and had 11 rebounds for UCI (5-7). Gamez scored 11 points for Loyola Marymount (4-8).

The Anteaters made 16 of 18 free throws.

In the Southern California College Classic:

Southern California College 94, Gordon College 30--Kristi Wright had 19 points and Amee Pina and Marisa Emde each scored 13 to lead SCC (8-5). The Vanguards held Gordon to 12 points in the second half as 11 players scored for the Vanguards.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Concordia 91, Western Montana 83--Harald Hofmann had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead Concordia (9-5).

In the UC Irvine Individual swimming invitational:

UC Irvine women take fifth--Michelle Dienzo placed second in the 100-meter butterfly (1:01.58) and third in the 50-meter freestyle (25.55) and 100-meter backstroke (1:04.33) for UC Irvine.

UC Irvine men finish third--UC Irvine’s Dan Klatt dominated the 50-meter freestyle (21.78), 100-meter backstroke (54.40), and 100-meter freestyle (47.26).
