A Sandwich That’s Fit for a Rainy Day

Share

It’s a relief we don’t have to deal with “The Blizzard of ‘99” like the rest of the country, but the latest meal deal at Subway sandwich shops may make Californians wish the weather weren’t so darned good.

Buy any regularly priced sandwich and a 21-ounce drink now through the end of May, and you’ll get a second sub of equal or lesser value free. But only if it’s raining.

The rainy-day special was created last year for the L.A. market (which includes San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange and Ventura counties).

“When we first decided to do it, a year ago, there were dire predictions for El Nin~o,” explains Ruth Sender, president of OhCal Foods, which represents Subway franchisees in L.A. County. “[Still], we had some complaints from the franchise owners about customers trying to cash in on the deal, saying it rained earlier in the day, [or] it was raining in another part of the city.”

This year’s special is available only if it’s raining on the store at the time of purchase. Makes you wish El Nin~o would rear its ugly head more often.
