Several demonstrations at public gardens on how to properly prune roses--maybe the best way to learn this craft--are on tap. Some nurseries also will offer free demonstrations, including Hortus in Pasadena (Jan. 16, 24 and Feb. 13) and the Outdoor Room in Pacific Palisades (Jan. 16 and 17).

* Saturday, demonstration on rose pruning and discussion of rose care, 9:30 a.m., at Sherman Gardens, 2647 East Coast Highway, Corona del Mar, (949) 673-2261. Free.

* Saturday, demonstration on pruning new and antique roses (including “pegging” long canes), 10 a.m., at Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Can~ada Flintridge, (818) 952-4401. Adults, $5; seniors and students, $3; children, $1.

* Saturday, demonstration on rose pruning sponsored by the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at a home garden, 1400 9th St., Manhattan Beach, (310) 796-0282. $10. (Event canceled if it rains).

* Saturday-Sunday, rose pruning and garden show, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday (with a rose-pruning demonstration at 10 a.m.) and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday (with a rose-pruning demonstration at 11 a.m.), plus other talks throughout both days, displays and vendors, at the Glendale Civic Auditorium, 1401 N.
