After serving the city as a construction inspector for 19 years, Francisco “Fico” Aguilera died of heart failure Monday while riding his bike to work.

Fico Aguilera was born 56 years ago in one of the first developed areas of the city, the “Little Hollywood” section of 1920s homes off Los Rios Street. He was the youngest of six children and the only boy.

He earned an associate degree at South Coast Community College and worked for 14 years as a construction inspector for the city of Laguna Beach.

“Everybody knew my pop,” said Anthony Aguilera, 29, Aguilera’s only child. “He always drove around in the [San Juan Capistrano] city truck and would wave to everyone.” Aguilera’s job was to inspect new city roads and maintain existing ones.

There will be a funeral service Friday at a local Catholic church.
