FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Fishing is slow but there have been some notable catches. Steve Derienzo, Palmdale, caught a 16-pound striped bass on a sardine. Josh Harker, Tujunga, 14-pound striper on an anchovy. Hiro Shimizu, Japan, caught a nine-pound bass after learning of the lake on the Internet. He used a small jig.

PYRAMID LAKE--Fishing remains spotty. A few small stripers, caught on anchovies and sardines, make up the week’s report.

LAKE PIRU--Trout are cooperating for those trolling fire-tiger Rapalas and Needlefish at the east end. Power Bait and inflated night crawlers are getting some too. Bass fishing is slow.

CASITAS LAKE--A few large bass are showing at the scales. Crawdads are best for the smaller fish. The trout bite remains good. Top catch, a four-pounder by Tom Stallings, Ojai, on a Needlefish trolled at about 30 feet. Some catfish. Michelle Elshere, Ojai, 10- and eight-pound catfish, on mackerel from shore at Santa Ana Arm.

CACHUMA LAKE--Trout are biting well for those using night crawlers and Power Bait, with many in the five-pound class. Trollers using Needlefish are also doing well. Lots of limits. Other species slow.

CORONA LAKE--A lot of trout are in the lake, but get there early because the daytime heat is driving them down and making them sluggish.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--See Corona.

IRVINE LAKE--Trout are biting mornings for shore and boat anglers, and two dozen fish weighed seven pounds or more in the last week. Top catch, a 15-8 trout by Richard Maxwell, Los Angeles. Power Bait and trolled Kastmasters and Rapalas are getting most of the big fish. Light line helps too.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Trout fishing picked up Wednesday morning and is still going strong, but only mornings because of the semi-heat wave. Power Bait, night crawlers and darter jigs working. Some of the trout are close to 10 pounds but the average is two-three pounds.

OSO RESERVOIR--The bass bite is steady for those jigging chrome Kastmasters and Hopkins spoons. Jim and Jannie Maguiri, Torrance, caught 46 bass and 14 catfish on Hopkins spoons. Yes, even the catfish were caught on spoons.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--A few trout and bass are being caught on the usual baits and lures.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass are being caught sporadically on top-water lures and plugs, primarily at the east end and Ramp 2. A 12-pounder was caught by Don Fisher, Perris, on a swim-bait.

LAKE PERRIS--The bass bite is still fair, but the big fish have stoped biting. Plastic worms are the best bet. The trout bite has slowed but a few are being caught.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Murray is the best bet for big bass. One 11 pounds 7 ounces was caught by Greg Smith, Poway, on a crawdad, and another 10-4 was caught by Bobby Swartwood, Chula Vista, on a Castaic Soft Bait. Trout fishing is fair at Murray and Miramar.

LAKE JENNINGS--Trout fishing is fair to good, with some limits reported. They range in size from one to three pounds and are biting best on Power Bait.

LAKE CUYAMACA--The trout bite has picked up dramatically, with bright-colored Roostertails with gold blades getting most. Inflated night crawlers are working well too. Brad Mosell, Apple Valley, caught a four-pounder on orange Power Bait.
