Sherman Named as House Deputy Whip

The Conejo Valley’s man in Congress, Rep. Brad Sherman, has been appointed to a House leadership position: deputy whip.

As one of about 45 vote counters in the Democrats’ 211-member caucus, Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) will lobby his party members on legislation and help coordinate strategy.

Sherman, whose district includes Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park and Oak Park, said he was honored by the appointment, which he sought from Minority Whip David E. Bonior (D-Mich.), the No. 2 Democrat in the House.

“This isn’t the most exclusive club in the House by a long shot,” Sherman said Tuesday. “It is additional work, but given how closely divided the House is, I think it’s an important role.”

An accountant and tax attorney, Sherman said he expects to contribute especially on taxation and fiscal issues, as well as environmental bills.

Just entering his second congressional term, Sherman said he lacks the clout to twist the arms of House colleagues and instead will use gentle persuasion to corral votes among the minority party.

“We need everybody on our team,” he said, “and then we’re still six votes short.”

But just because he is charged with promoting the democratic line, Sherman said he cannot always be counted on to vote with his party.

“I will work with the whip organization only when I agree strongly with the outcome,” he said.
