Impeachment

Share

* I have all the House representatives who voted for impeachment neatly typed out and taped to my refrigerator door. When the Senate votes I will do the same. When the election rolls around, I will send this list to my family, friends and colleagues. We will then vote the arrogant bastards out of office.

The message? This is not an impeachable offense.

Lest anyone be misled by the president’s apologists, I know many people who want Bill Clinton removed from office. None are Christian fundamentalists nor even attend church, to my knowledge. So, the Christian-right-as-bogeyman script doesn’t fly with me.

Regarding partisanship, does anyone really believe that Richard Nixon would not have faced impeachment by the Democrats alone, if the Republicans had hung together in his defense as the House Judiciary Committee Democrats did for Clinton?

The Senate impeachment trial has certainly demonstrated that besides hypocrisy, the Republican House leadership has proved that the Peter Principle is alive and well.

Hats off to Larry Flynt for his brilliant campaign against hypocrisy in Congress (Jan. 12). His reductio ad absurdum argument points up the need to keep separate the public and private areas of life. We elect people to run the country, not to moralize about sexual behavior. If pornographer Flynt’s behavior is wrong, so much more so is the behavior of Republican congressmen harassing the president. We hold them to a higher standard.

I am a 10-year-old girl, but I am still aware of what has been going on with President Clinton. I would like everyone to stop thinking about this and get on with their lives. I would prefer them to be improving the world, not wasting time on this subject.

The republic of the United States is based on the rule of law. The recent law breach of perjury and obstruction of justice by the president is only one in a continuing line of illegal and immoral activities by a man who appears to believe that he is above the law. There can be no double standard. Without accountability at all levels, the republic cannot survive.

Everyone in the House and Senate is making a charade according to his or her interpretation of constitutional responsibilities, fairness and justice. Is not there anything in the Constitution which tells these elected officials to be guided by, respect and comply with the will of the majority of the people in removing a twice-elected and still-popular president?

I’m proud of the Senate. This will be the fairest, most nonpartisan and dignified discussion about sex in the history of the world!
