Marriott Vacation Club International has broken ground on a time-share luxury resort on the California coast. Marriott Newport Coast Villas, consisting of 650 two-bedroom units, is scheduled to open its first phase by the middle of next year. The city hopes to annex the unincorporated area between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach.

Marriott bought the site from Walt Disney Co., which had considered its own time-share resort for the site. Prices are not set. But Marriott’s average price for a time share is $17,500, entitling the buyer to a one-week stay at the resort once a year for as long as they own it.
