Oilers Get Early Goal, Stop Chargers

Shaun Haney scored in the 11th minute and Huntington Beach held on to defeat Edison, the ninth-ranked team in Orange County, 1-0, in a Sunset League boys’ soccer game Friday at Edison.

The Oilers (10-6-2, 3-1 in league) have nine shutouts and have given up only one goal in league play.

The Chargers are 2-1-2 in league.

In other Sunset League games:

No. 6 Esperanza 3, No. 7 Fountain Valley 1--The Barons had a player ejected with 10 minutes left in the first half and another eight minutes into the second half.

Matt McNally scored the winning goal for host Esperanza (16-2-3, 3-1-1) one minute into the second half and Tyson Sybesma sealed the victory with a goal three minutes later.

Los Alamitos 4, Marina 3--Jeremy Nishamoto scored the game-winner for Los Alamitos (11-5-1, 3-1).

In the Academy League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 1, Downey Calvary Chapel 0--Bob Jansen scored in the 79th minute off a pass from Matt Lindsay and Zac Sandberg made four saves for his third shutout of the season for the host Eagles (4-7-2, 2-1-1).

In the Century League:

Villa Park 2, Canyon 1--Jake Huber scored the game-winner in the 75th minute off an assist from Wedge Howland. Hamed Kahil’s goal on a penalty kick in the 44th minute tied it, 1-1, for visiting Canyon.

Joel Rayo scored in the 18th minute for Villa Park (8-9-2, 3-2).

Foothill 1, Orange 0--Omar Rodriguez scored his 14th goal of the season on a free kick from outside the penalty area in the game’s 60th minute for Foothill (11-6-2, 4-1). Orange is 8-5, 4-1.

In the Empire League:

No. 6 El Dorado 5, Cypress 0--Brian Depolo and Scott Gwartz each scored two goals for El Dorado (19-1-1, 4-1).

Katella 2, Kennedy 0--Salim Sanchez scored his sixth goal in three games to lead Katella (7-6-2, 4-1).

Loara 2, Century 1--Tony Cuellar scored the tying goal in the 55th minute and the game-winner a minute later for host Loara (8-7-2, 3-2).

Sergio Bustos scored in the 50th minute for Century (6-8-4, 0-5).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 4, La Quinta 2--David Pines scored two goals and Felipe Garcia had two assists for host Garden Grove (1-12-2, 1-3-2).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 3, Sierra Madre Maranatha 1--Jeff Renevier scored two first-half goals for host Orange Lutheran (14-3-2, 5-0).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 2, Western 1--Korey Felix tied the score, 1-1, and Daniel Flores scored the game-winner in the 58th minute for Brea (15-2, 4-0).

Anaheim 2, Valencia 2--Jose Felix scored the tying goal in the 70th minute for host Valencia (3-8-3, 0-2-2). Anaheim (2-6-3, 0-2-2) took a 2-1 lead when Max Monroy scored in the 55th minute.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 2, Costa Mesa 0--Rich Hada scored in the 25th minute off a cross from Andy Cuno, who had two assists. Aliso Niguel (6-6-3, 2-2-1) outshot visiting Costa Mesa 22-5.

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 4, Corona del Mar 2--Sebastian Galmarini and Jonathon Nebot each scored twice for Santa Margarita (10-6-4, 2-2-1).

No. 1 Woodbridge 1, Newport Harbor 0--Senior Doug Allan made eight saves for his 58th career shutout and 11th this season. Mark Oehlman scored an unassisted goal in the 55th minute for visiting Woodbridge (16-1-1, 4-0-1).

In the South Coast League:

No. 8 Trabuco Hills 1, Dana Hills 1--Chris LeVeque scored the tying goal on a header off a pass by Rick Eckstein with six minutes remaining for Dana Hills (8-6-8, 1-0-5). Kit Hager scored Trabuco Hills’ only goal.
