Former White House intern Monica S. Lewinsky flew to Washington from her home in Los Angeles on Saturday after a federal judge ordered her to submit to an interview in preparation for possible Senate testimony next week. Senate Democrats protested the court-enforced interview because it was instigated by Independent Counsel Kenneth W. Starr to help House managers bolster their case. Starr had obtained the ruling from Chief U.S. District Judge Norma Holloway Johnson.
Senators, meanwhile, got more answers to written questions from White House lawyers and the Republican House managers as the impeachment trial held an unusual weekend session. The Senate appears headed for more bitter partisan clashes on Monday on how to proceed with the trial, whether to curtail it or expand it by hearing live testimony from Lewinsky or other witnesses.
TODAY’S PROCEEDINGS
More than 20 senators are scheduled to appear on television talk shows to discuss their views on the trial and where it should go. Lewinsky will undergo informal questioning at a closed-door session of Starr prosecutors and House managers.
