We’re Still Waiting for Call From Wicks

Share

Former USC guard Mack Calvin was surprised to see his name in the news last week.

Calvin, who played for the Trojans in the late 1960s, was an all-conference selection as a senior. After college, he spent more than a decade in professional basketball, starting with Los Angeles in the American Basketball Assn. and finishing his career in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He later was an interim coach of the Clippers.

His name popped up recently when former UCLA guard and current USC Coach Henry Bibby talked about the rivalry between the schools. Bibby recalled watching UCLA star Sidney Wicks try to choke Calvin during a summertime pick-up game 30 years ago.

Calvin, who still lives in Southern California, called with a clarification: He said the scuffle ended with him breaking free, grabbing a chair and chasing Wicks from the gymnasium.

“Tell Henry he’s a Trojan now,” Calvin said. “So he’s got to tell the truth.”

Coming up: Thursday at Washington, Saturday at Washington State.
