Voters to Decide Fate of Midtown Face-Lift
Responding to critics of its plan to redevelop the midtown area, the City Council has decided to spend up to $100,000 to hold a special election on the project.
But rather than celebrating the Monday night victory, members of the group that gathered 8,292 valid signatures to force the June election said Tuesday they were looking ahead to fighting the project for the next five months.
“We’ll use as many different ways to educate the population as possible,” said Allen St. James, a member of Ventura CARES. He owns Tiki Trader’s Hawaii Shop, located within the proposed redevelopment area.
The redevelopment area is bounded by East Main Street, Ash Street, East Thompson Boulevard and Mills Road, and includes the Buenaventura Mall on Telegraph Road. Supporters of the $74-million redevelopment plan also are preparing an education campaign.
“We want to get out the correct information on the plan,” said Zoe Taylor, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.
