At the urging of Councilman Dave Christensen, the City Council considered joining the Orange County Regional Airport Authority on Tuesday night, but the motion failed, 3 to 2. Irvine currently belongs to the El Toro Reuse Planning Authority, an anti-El Toro airport group.

Christensen and Councilman Larry Agran, honorary chairman of the non-aviation group Project 99, voted for the motion, contending that it is crucial to share information on the proposed plan to build an international airport at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. By joining OCRAA, the pro-El Toro airport group, the city could gain useful knowledge that could help in its fight against the airport, the councilmen said.

Mayor Christina L. Shea, however, noted that OCRAA could solicit other cities to join the group by using Irvine as an example of its membership.
