They were careful not to stake a position on the volatile debate over the future of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, but City Council members this week unanimously voted to join a group that supports an international airport at the site.

Peggy Ducey, executive director of the Orange County Regional Airport Authority, urged the city to join the 11 others that make up the group. “It gives the city a more influential voice in the county’s planning process,” Ducey said, adding that a number of member cities are “adamantly neutral” on the airport issue.

“We are not committing to a position on El Toro,” Mayor Joanne Coontz said. But joining the group will allow the city to gather information about the future of the site and how flight patterns might affect the city.
