A $1,000 reward is being offered by Orange Unified School District in an effort to catch the culprit who dumped used motor oil in the pool at Villa Park High School last week. The vandalism caused $5,000 to $7,500 in damage and has interrupted the school’s water-sports programs.

At a special meeting Thursday night, trustees unanimously approved putting up the reward. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident, district officials said. The pool will be closed at least until mid-February for repairs. The pool is being drained, which will take up to five days. A major cost is refilling the Olympic-size pool with 320,000 gallons of water, said Judy Frutig, district spokeswoman.

Anyone with information about the incident may call an anonymous tip line at (800) 472-7766. The caller will be given an identification number, and if the tip results in an arrest and conviction, the person will collect the reward.
