Fire Damages Van Nuys Commercial Complex

Share

Fire raced through a two-story commercial complex Thursday, damaging three businesses and slightly injuring a firefighter.

The greater-alarm blaze, which was visible for miles in the early evening darkness, broke out shortly after 6 p.m. at the Edward Feinstein business center in the 15000 block of Delano Street, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

Eleven fire companies--some 55 firefighters--battled the blaze, which burned through the roof of the structure and damaged firms specializing in landscaping, washing machine repairs and computers, Humphrey said.

A 31-year-old firefighter, whose name was not made public, suffered smoke inhalation. The six-year veteran was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where doctors reported he would be kept overnight for observation, Humphrey said.

No other injuries were reported.

Firefighters took about 45 minutes to douse the flames, which were out by 6:50 p.m.

Late Thursday, investigators were sifting through the building’s charred remains to find clues to the origin of the fire.

The blaze caused about $250,000 in damage to the building and about $75,000 in damage to the contents, Humphrey said.
