Kennedy Gets Gym Dandy News From Board Official

From Staff Reports

Julie Korenstein, a member of the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, said Thursday she is “convinced” Kennedy High will be soon getting a new gymnasium.

The school gym was severely damaged during the 1994 Northridge earthquake and remains open, but school and district officials have been debating ever since whether to build a new gym or settle for a retrofit.

Korenstein said LAUSD Supt. Ruben Zacarias is “100%” behind the gym project. The Federal Emergency Management Agency would pay half the cost of the project estimated at more than $7 million. Funds from Certificates of Participation would be used by the school district to pay the rest.

The Los Angeles school board must give final approval. It will not come up for consideration until March at the earliest.

The gym would be built next to the old gym on existing tennis courts. Once it is completed, the old gym would be torn down and replaced with tennis courts.
