Still More to Do to Save Open Space
* Re your June 20 editorial, “Progress for Open Space”:
Today we have additional highways, such as Aliso Creek Road and Santa Maria, scheduled to be cut into Laguna Canyon. Is this progress for open space?
Most of the greenbelt in the coastal area surrounding Laguna Beach that was not purchased by the taxpayers, such as Crystal Cove State Park and open space in Laguna Canyon, was mandated to be set aside by the California Environmental Quality Act as mitigation for development along the Newport Coast and in Irvine.

* Thank you for so sufficiently putting together the history of the preservation campaign that has created the South Coast Wilderness.
This 19,000-acre system of wilderness parks and marine resources in and around Laguna Canyon is a tribute to those who for over 30 years followed their commitment.
There is still more to do, but with the same commitment, it will be a win-win solution.
