Police Chief Bob McDonell will discuss the state of policing in the city at Wednesday’s meeting of Speak Up Newport, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public and promoting participation in government. Past speakers include former mayors, city managers and council people.

“We try to chose issues that would be in the interest of the public,” said George Schroeder, vice president for Speak Up Newport. The group was founded 19 years ago because community members believed their ideas needed to be heard, Schroeder said.

The forum will begin with a 45-minute presentation by McDonell, followed by a question-and-answer session. The open meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Cannery restaurant. Information: George Schroeder, (949) 644-6200.
