* Mexican telephone group Telmex won Federal Communications Commission approval to take control of TSC, or Telmex/Sprint Communications, a long-distance telephone business it once operated in a 50-50 partnership with Sprint Corp. The two companies said in May that they had parted ways and that Telmex would buy out Sprint’s stake in the business, which provides service between the U.S. and Mexico.

* Seagram Co., owner of Universal Studios, said its Spencer Gifts Inc. unit acquired Spirit Halloween Superstores, a closely held retail chain, for an undisclosed price.
