A matador was seriously gored Thursday during the daily bullfight at the famed San Fermin festival in the northern Spanish city of Pamplona.

The bull’s horn pieced Vicente Bejarano’s groin as he tried to plunge his sword into the animal. He was lifted into the air for several seconds.

No internal organs were damaged, but the 10-inch wound would probably prevent Bejarano from ever fighting bulls again, the state-owned news agency Efe quoted Dr. Hector Ortiz as saying. Ortiz operated on Bejarano.

The centuries-old San Fermin festival became internationally famous after the 1926 publication of Ernest Hemingway’s novel “The Sun Also Rises.”

Since that time the daily bullfights have lost prominence in the festival that is now best known for its nonstop partying and bull runs.
