Eagle and Flag
Aksel Pedersen writes (letter, July 9) that he cannot understand “the difference between the symbolic bird and our symbolic cloth, as far as not offering protection to both.” I share his personal abhorrence of someone burning an American flag. Yet I also cherish freedom of speech.
The difference is this: If every American flag now extant was immediately destroyed, we could manufacture replacements tomorrow. Try that trick with an extinct species!
