Re “Toyota Faces Massive Fines in EPA Battle,” July 13: While I certainly support the EPA’s efforts to help reduce pollution from motor vehicles, it seems bizarre at best to consider that Toyota could be forced to pay up to $60 billion in fines for fuel-vapor warning problems “except from their biggest sport-utility vehicles.”

SUVs (legally) create two to three times the pollution (including greenhouse gases) of normal autos and are much more likely to kill or maim others with their skull-level bumpers, etc. SUVs are just big, dirty, dangerous passenger cars, and they should be treated as such under pollution and safety laws.
