A tree crashed into a power pole Thursday, taking out power to about 1,300 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers, a spokeswoman said.

The tree went down about 2:15 p.m. at 4320 Ensenada Place near Golondrina Street, said the DWP’s Lisa Tashiro. Power was restored to most customers by 4 p.m.

Later Thursday, an estimated 1,600 customers in Pacoima lost power when a smoking circuit was shut down to prevent damage in the distribution station. Service was restored to half of those customers by 8 p.m.

Officials aren’t yet sure what caused that problem.

“The power went out by itself, much like a residential circuit breaker,” said DWP’s Gilbert Hidalgo. “It knows something’s wrong.”
