TONIGHT

ANGELS’ MIKE FYHRIE (0-1, 10.57 ERA)

vs.

PADRES’ BRIAN BOEHRINGER (5-2, 2.98 ERA)

* Update--While Padre right fielder Tony Gwynn has been on the disabled list, Tampa Bay’s Wade Boggs passed him on the way to 3,000 hits. Boggs has 2,985 to Gwynn’s 2,982. Gwynn, sidelined by a strained calf, was in the starting lineup Thursday at Seattle but was scratched--and remained on the disabled list--because of tightness in the calf. Boehringer, a reliever-turned-starter, is 3-1 in his last five games, and former Angel Phil Nevin has made significant contributions, hitting .257 with 10 homers and 35 RBIs while playing catcher, first base, third base, left field and right field. Fueled by a 14-game win streak, the Padres went from 13 1/2 games back and last place on June 17 to five games back and third place.
