JFK Jr. Mourners Can Sign Mortuary Book

After receiving more than a dozen phone calls this week from residents looking for a way to send condolences to the family of John F. Kennedy Jr., a Ventura funeral home will set out several register books for people to sign.

The bodies of Kennedy and his wife and sister-in-law were found in ocean waters off Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., Wednesday morning. The three died in a plane crash Friday night en route to the island.

The registers will be available to the public at Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday. The funeral home is at 757 E. Main St.

“He was a well-loved national figure,” said funeral director David A. Buchta.

Guests can simply sign their name or jot down any thoughts or sentiments they have about the tragedy, Buchta said. Space in the books is unlimited and as many books as needed will be used, he added. Pens will be available.

The occasion is the second time the funeral home has opened its doors to the public for this type of event.

Following the death of Princess Diana in a car crash in August 1997 in Paris, funeral home officials mailed two dozen signed register books to the Spencer family in England, Buchta said.

In return, the funeral home received a thank-you letter from the royal family, Buchta said.
