J. Michael Derem; Operated Yacht Charter Firm

J. Michael Derem, 64, operator of a special events yacht charter company who also created Southern California Bride magazine in the 1980s. In recent years, Derem operated the Celebration Yacht in Marina del Rey, catering to weddings, company outings and other events. Earlier, he was a partner in the Sundowner Yacht Charter firm, whose ship burned and sank while chartered for a company Christmas party cruise in 1996. Derem was not aboard, and none of the 70 passengers and crew was injured seriously. In 1986, Derem founded Southern California Bride magazine. He said at the time that he undertook the project after noting how many weddings were booked on his chartered yacht, which made him realize that big weddings were once again popular and lucrative. Derem, who had several companies during his career, also offered motivational speeches and wrote a self-published book, “Fail Your Way to Success.” On Monday in Marina del Rey of a heart attack.

Anthony Marshall; Produced TV Series With Son

Anthony W. “Tony” Marshall, 93, who worked with his son, Garry Marshall, to produce such television comedies as “Happy Days” and its spinoff, “Laverne and Shirley.” The latter series starred Tony Marshall’s daughter, Penny, who went on to become a successful director. A third child, daughter Ronny Hallin, also worked for the Marshall production company. The senior Marshall was a documentary industrial filmmaker in Bronx, N.Y., when his son began to achieve producing success in Hollywood and enlisted his father’s help. Tony Marshall also worked for his son on the comedy series “The Odd Couple” and “Mork & Mindy,” which made Robin Williams a star. Garry and Penny Marshall always credited their father, a graduate of New York University who worked in advertising and public relations before turning to production, with great influence on their lives and careers. Angelo F. Monteverdi; Founded Furniture Company

Angelo F. Monteverdi, 89, founder and president of Monteverdi-Young Furniture Co., which makes office and home furniture. Author Dean R. Koontz works at a custom-made Monteverdi desk. Other celebrity owners have included actor John Travolta and singer Vic Damone. The pricey office furniture line includes $14,000 desks and $11,000 conference tables. Monteverdi furnished offices around the world for Hilton Hotel Corp., Hughes Aircraft, GTC, MGM and Warner Bros. studios and Coca-Cola Co. The furniture has earned awards from the American Institute of Architects, Pacific Design Center and the Design Journal. Born in San Francisco, Monteverdi established his company on Los Angeles’ Alameda Street in 1934. His aim throughout his life, colleagues said, was to build high-quality furniture with old-fashioned craftsmanship. On Sunday in Beverly Hills of lung problems.
