The City Council last week voted to keep residents’ monthly payments for garbage collection at $15.45, even though the garbage disposal company the city contracts with is raising its rates. The council agreed to use money from a solid waste fund to finance a 37-cents-per-customer increase from the disposal company. The council established the fund in 1995 to stabilize any fee hikes from the disposal company. For the next two years, the city will pay $153,233 from the fund.

As another cost-saving measure for residents, customers will receive credit for recyclable materials, which have recently gained in worth, according to a city document.
