NHTSA Upgrades Gas Tank Investigation
Associated Press
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded an investigation into DaimlerChrysler minivans and General Motors Corp. pickups because of the possibility a gas tank could leak in a side-impact crash and start a fire. Agency investigators will examine the fuel tanks of minivans from model years 1996-99 and some pickups from model years 1994-99. The agency estimates there are about 2 million of the minivans and nearly 1.3 million of the pickups on the road. DaimlerChrysler and GM are cooperating in the investigations.
