Glenn Heads Panel to Improve Math, Science Teaching
WASHINGTON — Space pioneer and former Sen. John Glenn will lead a new panel to improve the pool of math and science teachers in the nation’s elementary and secondary schools.
Education Secretary Richard W. Riley announced last week that Glenn will chair the National Commission on Math and Science Teaching in the 21st Century.
Glenn, 78, was the first American to orbit the Earth, in 1962, and last year returned to space as a shuttle astronaut.
His panel, also to be known as the Glenn Commission, has been given one year to study the state of math and science education from kindergarten through 12th grade and recommend ways to attract, prepare and keep good math and science teachers.
