Deputy City Manager Abruptly Resigns
Deputy City Manager Steve Chase abruptly cleared his desk and quit his job Monday night, apparently catching his boss and the City Council by surprise.
Chase declined comment Tuesday, saying he would not elaborate until he has discussed the matter with city officials.
City Manager Donna Landeros said Chase had mentioned in previous conversations a desire for a new career, but had not indicated his departure would be imminent.
“I didn’t expect this at all,” she said.
“I met with him last Wednesday and he was really positive and upbeat, and feeling like he was making a contribution.”
Chase resigned the same night the City Council heard details of a consultant’s 215-page report on poor morale among city employees.
Chase has worked for the city since 1990. He was assistant city manager until 1996, when he was promoted by Landeros.
In January, he was given a temporary position overseeing the Planning Department.
