NEWPORT BEACH
The City Council unanimously approved a recommendation Monday to place two police officers on the campuses of Newport Harbor High School, Corona del Mar High School and Ensign Intermediate School. Fueled by pleas from Newport Beach police officers, the council unanimously voted in favor of the School Resource Officer Program that also will teach a recently developed high school Drug Abuse Resistance Education curriculum. Members of a joint committee representing the City Council and the Newport-Mesa Unified School District met earlier this month to outline the program. Officers would teach DARE’s traditional anti-drug curriculum and would be available to handle other public safety issues on the campus such as domestic violence, date rape and teenage driving.
