Bomb Killed Man on Mower, ATF Says
JASPER, Ala. — A bomb caused a mysterious backyard explosion that killed both a man riding on his lawn mower and his dog, investigators said Wednesday.
“We’ve requested a forensic chemist to come in since this is now considered a homicide,” said Jaime Reyes, chief federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent.
There were no suspects in the bombing and investigators had not determined what kind of explosive device was used or where it was placed, Reyes said.
The Monday afternoon blast ripped the mower apart and instantly killed 52-year-old James Larry McAnnally, who worked for a construction company in Birmingham. His dog was killed also.
The mower’s steering wheel was blown over the house into the front yard, and other pieces of machinery were flung on the roof and in neighbors’ yards.
