9-Year-Old Anne Would Like a Taste of the Outdoor Life

Anne, 9, lives in a drug treatment facility with her mother. Her father, an alcoholic, lives elsewhere. Anne has inhabited a world of addicts most of her young life. She and her mother hope to soon move to a transitional center for the homeless. Anne will enter fifth grade in the fall. She wants to be an artist and to work with animals. Someday, she would like to have a job where she can be out of doors. A week at summer camp would give Anne the opportunity to explore these goals.

Since its creation in 1954, the Times Camp Fund, made up of donations from Times readers and employees, has generated more than $21 million toward helping more than 300,000 Southland children attend camp.

Because The Times absorbs all costs associated with administering the Camp Fund and Bank of America donates accounting services, 100% of donations goes directly to providing camperships.

The Times does not own or operate any camps, but allocates its funds to youth agencies that use or maintain camps accredited by the American Camping Assn. An outside committee of community leaders distributes the money to the agencies based on their size and need.

It costs an average of $125 to provide a child with a week’s stay at summer camp. Unless donors request otherwise, all donations of $25 or more will be included in a list that appears each Tuesday in Southern California Living.
