Olusegun Obasanjo

* Re “Civilian Leader Vows New Era for Nigerians,” May 29:

Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo can start the new era today by declaring his own assets and mandating all staff in the entire government to do so. Many people who are members of his inner circle are the same treasury-looters who have secretly kept billions of dollars in overseas accounts at the expense of the people they govern. The opportunity given Obasanjo was not ordained; the election was micromanaged by the military establishment and corrupt politicians to preserve the status quo. Until Obasanjo breaks away from the disreputable people, Nigeria’s potential will never be attainable and Nigerians who did not vote for him will continue to be skeptical of his leadership.

All the ill-gotten wealth looted by previous administrations must be searched for and public judgment rendered to those who were found guilty. Gen. Obasanjo, your words alone cannot change the enormous problems you face; how you perform will give you the needed support of Nigerians.
