Supermarket Shooting Victims Are Identified

A day after the shooting deaths of four supermarket workers, police were still struggling Friday to come up with clues that might help explain why a man would storm into an Albertsons at dawn and open fire with a pump-action shotgun.

“We have no motive at this point,” Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Lt. Rick Alba said Friday afternoon.

Zane Floyd, 23, was in custody without bail, charged with four counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

The four employees killed in the rampage were identified by the Clark County coroner’s office as Thomas Darnell, 40; Chuck Leos, 41; Dennis Troy Sergent, 29; and Luci Tarantino, 60, all of Las Vegas.

A fifth victim, Zachary Emenegger, 21, of Las Vegas, remained in critical condition at University Medical Center.

There were 25 employees, shoppers and vendors in the store when the rampage began.

Some employees returned to the store for counseling Friday, hours before it was scheduled to reopen for business at the busy intersection two miles west of the Strip. Other employees chose to undergo crisis counseling at a union hall.

One visitor at the store Friday was Tony Marquez, 24, who described himself as a close friend of Floyd. The two worked as bouncers at Sneakers, a local club.

“Everybody has their breaking point,” Marquez said. “That was not him. It was like a total 360, a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde thing. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Floyd had recently moved into a bungalow behind his parents’ home, two blocks from the supermarket. His parents issued a brief statement, saying: “We are obviously shaken, and our thoughts are with the victims’ families.”
