Two Birmingham High School students were seriously injured Thursday afternoon when they were hit by a car while crossing a street, authorities said.

The two boys--ages 15 and 16--were struck shortly after 5 p.m. in the 6500 block of Balboa Boulevard near Haynes Street, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

“Witnesses said the two were hit by a compact sedan,” he said.

“The driver, who remained on the scene, was shaken [but] not hurt.”

The two boys were taken by ambulance to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, suffering multiple fractures and, in the case of one student, head trauma, Humphrey said.

“The two are expected to recover,” he said. “While the cause of this accident is under investigation, we encourage motorists to be extra cautious in these last few weeks before school ends.”
