MISSION VIEJO

The City Council voted this week to appeal a denial by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for about $1 million in costs to permanently repair the Mojave slope. The 100-foot-tall slope in the Mojave Open Space is frequently damaged by winter rains. The city applied for federal funds to permanently repair the hillside after the El Nino-fueled storms of December 1997 and February 1998. City officials have won FEMA appeals in the past. Work on the Mojave slope is scheduled for this summer and fall.
