Lemon Wood Mobile Home Park

Re “Life Without a Hitch,” Ventura County Life column, May 28.

It is disappointing to have newspaper articles that are meant to display the ego of the writer and editorialize rather than report the story.

This article was supposed to report a significant award that had been given to the Lemon Wood Community. Instead, it started with an insulting headline, a desperate attempt to be cute in the first paragraph, insensitive reporting of a very prestigious award and irresponsible reporting about the composition of the population of our community.

The residents and management of the community are very proud of the award, which this article seemed intent upon denigrating by references that would lead people to believe that our community is just another trailer park. Also, by including references to the composition of the population, it almost invites attempts by criminals to invade this very secure park.

When a resident queried an editor about the article, the editor stated that the staff writer, Steve Chawkins, was a “humorist.” As residents of Lemon Wood, we want to make sure that both he and the editor understand that, in our opinion, he doesn’t qualify either as a humorist or a journalist.

The Times and the alleged journalist owe a very humble apology to the management and residents of Lemon Wood and should consider some sensitivity and journalistic training for the writer.
