Deputy Responding to Call Accidentally Shot

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was accidentally shot in the leg--either by herself or by another officer--while trying to break up a domestic dispute in Santa Clarita early Sunday, department officials said.

The shooting occurred shortly after midnight in the 25300 block of Via Telino, where deputies were responding to a 911 call.

“As the deputies were led into the home, they were confronted by a male in the hallway of the home, at which time it appeared that he was reaching for a weapon,” Deputy Mark Bailey said.

One or more of the deputies opened fire on the man, identified as James Foy, 41, who was not wounded.

“During the course of the shots being fired, a 9 1/2-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department sustained a gunshot wound to her thigh,” Bailey said. “Homicide investigators believe this gunshot may have been from friendly fire, either her own or her partners.”

The deputy, identified as Deanna Hall, was taken to a hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. Her injury was not considered life threatening.

A special weapons team talked the suspect into surrendering, officials said. Foy was booked on suspicion of spousal assault.
