A 59-year-old woman was sentenced to three months in county jail Monday after pleading guilty to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter stemming from the April 13 death of 8-year-old Brent Adams, who was killed while walking in a crosswalk with his twin brother.

“Please forgive me,” Margarita Gonzalez Monares said as she stood sobbing before Superior Court Judge Martin Hairabedian Jr. Brent’s parents, Toni and Edward Adams, showed no emotion as the judge handed down the sentence.

A police investigation showed Monares, on her way to work, sped up to get through the intersection while the light was yellow and struck the boy.

Monares will begin her sentence Aug. 28 at the Santa Ana County Jail. She was also placed on three years’ probation and her driver’s license was suspended for one year. She must also complete 100 hours of community service, take a driver’s training course and pay a $100 fine and restitution.
