Group of Deputies Forming New Union

A group of former members of the Assn. for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs union announced Tuesday that they are forming their own organization.

The deputies--six of whom were suspended from the union last month--allege that the union has failed to adequately represent its membership. They are calling their new union the Los Angeles Sheriffs Professional Assn.

“We’ve tried to implement reform and changes from the inside,” said Deputy Scott McKenzie, who was named vice president of the group. “Our goal from the beginning has been to do what’s right for the deputies. . . . It’s time to start over again.”

The deputies contend that they were suspended from the union May 18 for asking to witness the counting of the ballots for a proposed tentative deal the union negotiated with the Board of Supervisors.

Union officials, however, say the six deputies were suspended for colluding with management during the negotiations.
