Russell G. Anderson, a retired sergeant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, died at his home in Ventura on Tuesday. He was 76.

Anderson was born on Feb. 11, 1923, in Greenleaf, Kan. He attended school and worked on the family farm in Kansas. He served in the Navy during World War II.

When Anderson returned from the war, he moved to Los Angeles and married Patricia Ann Cousins on Valentine’s Day 1946.

He also began his career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department that year. He retired 30 years later and moved from Los Angeles to Ventura.

He became a real estate broker in Ventura and worked until earlier this year for several companies--MacElhenny, Levy & Co., Merrill Lynch Realty, Helen Yunker Realty and Park Place Realty.

Anderson’s son Tony, a former owner of Video Tyme in Ventura, said his father helped him many times when the video store’s business was growing. He said the staff called his father whenever they needed answers to questions.

“He really enjoyed his family and was a loving Christian father and husband,” the younger Anderson said.

Russell Anderson was an elder and a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Ventura.

In addition to his son, Anderson is survived by his wife of 53 years; another son, Mark, of Germany; daughter Sandra Fenton of Claremont; brothers Eugene of Riverside and Wallace of Enid, Okla.; sister Audrey Scott of Newton, Kan., and one grandchild.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.

Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Community Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be Pastor Mark Patterson.

Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
