Cypress Grade School Scores Rise

Share

Elementary school students in the Cypress School District improved on already good Stanford 9 scores this year, according to test results released Thursday.

Most districtwide scores in reading, math, language and spelling ranked in the 60th percentile; all beat the national average.

“We’re generally pleased with the scores,” said Cypress Supt. Bill Eller. “I’m not naive enough to attribute improved test scores to any particular issue. I ascribe the success to a strong instructional program, which is afforded by teachers. Also, I think our kids really try, which helps.”

Teachers in the 10-school district administered the standardized test to 3,229 pupils in grades two through six this spring. One in six children tested did not speak English fluently.

Individual schools showed scores ranging from the high 30s to the high 80s, but those marks were the exceptions.

Scores are expressed as percentiles, which rank students against a nationally selected group of peers. By definition, the 50th percentile is the national average, with half the pool scoring higher and half scoring lower.

Cypress Scores Improvements

Cypress elementary students made gains in Stanford 9 standardized tests this year, improving on what were already good scores. All but one of the districtwide totals ranked in at least the 60th percentile. The following listings show how scores ranked, on average, against a nationally selected group. A score in the 99th percentile, for example, is equal to or higher than all but 1% of the comparison group’s.
