Glendale Community College is seeking students for an AmeriCorps literacy program designed for low-income earners who want to become assistant preschool teachers. Participants, who will attend child development classes at the college, must commit to working with preschoolers 20 hours a week for one year. The San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council needs drivers to deliver meals one or two days a week for its Meals on Wheels and Meals to the Homebound programs. Participants usually volunteer from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays. For more information, call Kim Pixler (818) 718-6460, Ext. 3006.

The Volunteer Center Assistance League of Southern California is seeking volunteers for the 1999 Women’s World Cup Soccer Tournament during games at the Rose Bowl on July 10.

Volunteers are also needed at San Fernando Valley Neighborhood Legal Services offices in the Burbank, San Fernando and Van Nuys municipal courthouses; participants will interview domestic violence victims and help them obtain restraining orders.

Thrift store and office workers and a volunteer coordinator are needed at Guadalupe Community Center, at 21600 Hart St. in Canoga Park.

CareXchange, which helps Valley senior citizens do errands and take care of household chores, also is seeking volunteers.

Penny Lane, a North Hills nonprofit group that helps abused and emotionally disturbed teens, needs volunteers for its fund-raising and special events committee and its mentoring and tutoring programs. Mentors must commit to at least one call or visit a week to their assigned teens, who have little or no close family or friends. Tutors provide one-on-one or small-group help. Tutors to help adults improve their reading and writing skills may start by attending the first session of a 12-hour workshop from 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 22 at the Burbank Public Library’s auditorium, 110 N. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Museum Service Council needs volunteers for its welcome and information centers and Community Speakers Service program, to help the staff, host functions and staff the Boone Children’s Gallery. Participants should have some office skills. Benefits include special docent tours, lectures and field trips. Interviews are scheduled for August, and training runs from September to May.
