Japanese automaker Mazda Motor Co.’s unit in North America said Monday that it has voluntarily recalled about 22,500 pickups to inspect and replace their cruise control systems.

Irvine-based Mazda North American Operations said that in certain B-Series trucks of its 1998 and 1999 model years, a control cable in the cruise control system could come in contact with the system’s servo pulley. When that occurs, the cable would not let the vehicle’s throttle return to idle when the cruise control is disengaged. The problem could possibly cause an accident, Mazda said.

However, Mazda noted that it is not aware of any incidents caused by the potentially faulty cruise control. The automaker also said that operation of the vehicle, while the cruise control is not engaged, is not harmed by the flaw.

The company is asking owners of these particular Mazda pickups to bring their vehicles in for a thorough inspection that could last up to half a day at a company dealer. Meanwhile, it is asking owners not to use the cruise control system.
