Community leaders Lula Halfacre, Marian Bergeson, Clarence “Bus” Turner and Tom Johnson were honored Friday at the 39th annual Commodores Ball at the Hyatt Newporter. The black-tie affair was hosted by the Commodore Club of the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce.
Johnson was honored with the Commodore of the Year award. Johnson also served as master of ceremonies for the dinner event--not knowing he’d become a part of the festivities. Bergeson and Turner were honored as Citizens of the Year for 1998 and 1999. Bergeson served most recently as state secretary of child development and education. Turner finished a term as a councilman and mayor last year. He was honored for his contributions to the city’s economic development and his service on the Airport Working Group. Halfacre, co-owner of Traditional Jewelers, was recognized as the incoming chairman of the board of directors.
