Terrorism Suspect Charges at Judge

A terrorism suspect accused in connection with the U.S. Embassy bombings in Africa jumped from his courtroom seat and charged to within several feet of a judge before being tackled by U.S. marshals in New York City. “My heart was pounding,” said Jane Rosenberg, a courtroom artist who was seated near the judge. “I was scared. I was shaking. He leapt like Tarzan.” Wadih El Hage, a slight, bony man, ran at Judge Leonard Sand after Sand had refused earlier to read a letter from the defendant into the public record, saying the court was not a “vehicle for public declarations by the defendants.” El Hage came within eight to 10 feet of the judge before he was wrestled down and subdued by several marshals during a pretrial hearing. The wide-eyed judge had gotten out of his chair and backed up against a wall.
